This game is JRPG perfection and first great RPG of this generation. Load times are longer than most RPG's but the Retail copy seems fine and it doesn't take away from the experience which is stellar.

While it does not bring anything new to the table it presents a fun and interesting ride with very little innovation to offer. Storywise I must admit I am slightly disappointed with the overall plot, it seems a little contrived and full of cliches, it does however deliver some of the 'pulse pounding' moments of fun and adventure that I like in my JRPG's. In terms of its characters and prose-expressed back story the game borders on brilliance, I haven't seen such depth in my heroes outside of full length novels and several of the dream sequences with their well timed musical accompaniment brought a tear or two to my eyes. I DO feel that these are a bit of a cheat though, as a Videogame shouldn't be expressing its story through pure text, being a primarily visual medium. In terms of unfair reviews I was extremely put off by 1Up's review of this game and feel that it was extremely unfair, referencing 'tropes' that don't exist and bringing up 'cliche' titles like Xenogears and the Suikoden Series (which by and large tend to shrug off the storytelling tropes of the Final Fantasy Series). These people do not seem to have their cliche's and tropes straight and clearly need to revisit their old collections before they judge a game based on how 'traditional' it is and how much it bothers them. I have personally not noticed the long load times, though I have noticed some slight frame rate issues, mostly when I'm using the sprint function. I am greatly pleased by the skill system as I am a big fan of this "learning skills from your party members" concept. I was slightly annoyed that for the first 10 you only have one member to learn skills from though, resulting in a pretty uniform party. Overall that takes me back to the RPG's of the millenial cusp, before such massive innovations as Oblivion, FFXII, Mass Effect and others and reminds me how much RPG's have changed since those days. This is not a bad thing however and if Metacritics offered .5 ratings this game would warrant an 8.5 rather than simply an 8.…Expand

I love the series to death, but it's been downhill since FFX. It's obvious that Sakaguchi agrees -- Lost Odyssey is the direction Final Fantasy should have taken. Beautiful game, beautiful music, beautiful story. Technical issues are highly exaggerated - framerate never drops outside of the 3 seconds random battles take to load, and even then, it's negligible. This is also the first JRPG since FFIX to offer a true world map with a pilotable airship late in the game -- an element sorely lacking in FFX and FFXII. Combat is engaging and well-balanced, and the ability system doesn't punish the player or necessitate grinding. This is the first JRPG where I've looked forward to random battles, even 40 hours into the game. If you like Japanese RPGs, you owe it to yourself to play this game.…Expand
Lost Odyssey is one thing, if nothing else, and that is it is one epic story. I'm surprised how many reviewers dismissed the narrative of this game. I'm surprised how many reviewers dismissed the narrative of this game. It starts off slowly, but is packed with several heart-wrenching moments and, despite the fact that the story is, at its most basic, of the "villain trying to take over the world" variety, it tells one Hell of a story with its own unique twists. Once the motivations of the villain and his connection to everyone else is revealed, the story has quite the moral dilemma at stake. What is an RPG without the megalomaniac villain anyway? What is the alternative? A 30-hour quest back home because your character left the oven on? The battle formula is tried and true, and works fantastically. It's deep and challenging, allowing for ample strategy, and pulls off being challenging without relying heavily on cheap monster tactics (most of the time.) The visuals are superb, and I can't say I've noticed terribly much slowdown at all, even in the most detailed field maps. The obvious reason that there's a brief hitch at the start of battles is because...well, they have to load in the monsters somehow. And all these people seem to forget that UE3-based games are PLAGUED by load-ins, visible LOD/Texture swaps, and streaming hitches, almost universally across all games that use it. In closing, Lost Odyssey is the epitome of a great jRPG. There;s a fantastic story, and the fantastic visuals that can now rival the best of our imagination had to offer us in years past shows hope that even the most rudimentary and well-used styles of gaming still have a place in this next generation world.…Expand

While the game may start off slowly, it really gets going after disc 2 and I couldn't stop playing it. Any fan of Final Fantasy and JRPGs will love this game. I would have given it a ten if they kids had been left out and the framerate was a bit more steady with less load times.
Absolutely stunning - the game that FF12 should have been. Story, battle, link system are perfectly tuned using tried and tested formulas. The only reason why this game doesn't deserve a ten is because of the technical letdowns (framerate issues and load lag leading to 'pop ups').

Now, onto the worst things about Lost Odyssey. Random Battles get very irritating if they are placed in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sadly, this is true with Lost Odyssey. It is horrible frustrating to end a random battle while trying to solve a puzzle and then to take literally 2 steps forward to complete the puzzle and fall into another random battle. Another big problem with Lost Odyssey is that the Save Points are sometimes unforgiving. One example of this would be on Disc 3 in the Experimental Staff. The save points are an hour and a half of gameplay away in that area. Very irksome indeed... One thing that I find silly to complain about is how Lost Odyssey is very similar to the JRPGs that came before it such as FF-X. Sure the plots are similar, some of the characters are cookie-cut outs and the battle system doesn't really innovate so much. But, you dont need innovation for a great game. Mistwalker took the best elements from previous JRPG's and incorporated it into their own game. They also added in some of their own things to make the game as good as possible. It is very hard to innovate an almost perfect genre so I dont blame Mistwalker. You really have to play Lost Odyssey for yourself and formulate your own opinion. I'm sure that if you loved Final Fantasy X, you'll love Lost Odyssey. Even if you didn't like FF-X and you adore JRPGs, I still highly recommend that you try it out. Now I hear many people complaining about the disc packaging problem and I agree with them. In the US, the discs are horrible packaged and stacked on top of each other. For those of you buying the game in the US, remember to shake the box before you purchase the game to make sure that no discs are loose!…Expand
Real good game, of course it's not for everyone as you can see by the reviews, it was being criticized for being a turn-based RPG like older JRPG's. But there's nothing wrong with this style and it's great. Most people would agree, this is a very underrated game.
A real JRPG, no awful gimmicks, decent gameplay, decent story and all-round high production value. Loading times could be improved but they don't ruin the experience. Highly under-rated game, if it was called Final Fantasy 13, it would've sold millions and've had rave reviews.

The graphics are really good and the combat systems is different.
Fantastic story, tear jerking at times. Use of combat rings and ability to have immortals learn mortal spells adds alot to the game. One thing to remember is that just equipping an item doesn't make it available for use...you need to equip it, learn it and then reap the rewards!
Fantastic game. Enthralling story and very thoughtful dreams. Characters have all showed depth and promise for more. The battle system, not as revolutionary as I hoped is sill fun as the combinations with skills and equipment are plentiful. Much better than BD and rivals FF on story and nostalgia. If you long for a RPG for 360 pick it up, at least rent it.
One hell of a game. Man these reviewers surely didnt play the same game i did. While it has a vast amount of similarities to the old ff games. It feels like the only true successor to ffx. Not a rehash not a step back but a refinement of whats made the ff series great. if you enjoyed the ff games you have to play this.
Easily the best JRPG in a long time, I haven't had this much fun playing an RPG since the early FFs. Story is awesome, combat is old-school but very fun, characters are memorable, voice-acting is great, music is excellent, a few flaws, but most JRPG fans wont care. I certainly don't.

Walking into Numara for the 1st time reminded me of how beautifully crafted JRPGs typically are, especially since I had just played the kind of dark and gloomy settings of Fable 3 and Mass Effect 2 (both are also amazing games). Probably my only negative of the game would be the character designs, with Kaim being kind of bland looking, Seth looking a bit odd, and mainly Mack being dressed like a girl. In the end, Lost Odyssey a game I highly recommend to any RPG fan looking for a well crafted story, lots of content, great battle systems, and beautiful graphics.…Expand

One of the best games I've ever played. It's like a next gen final fantasy! A great game that really evokes emotion out of you! This game is very underated! The game would of got a 10, but the game drags on towards the end, I could never finish this game, cuz it was so long and the main story just kinda dragged.

Totally and utterly underated game.... i have no idea why this game didnt get more exposure, its fantastic, better than any final fantasy game that came out after the 9th one by a long shot.......... this is what final fantasy 10 should have been.... go buy now

Generally speaking the game is more of a 7/10. The battle system and music are solid, but dragged down by some questionable design decisions as well as the painfully mediocre plot (which is especially disappointing given how unique the premise is). HOWEVER the dream sequences in this game, that take the form of brief visual novel sections, contain some of the best storytelling I've ever encountered in a videogame. They take proper advantage of the concept of an immortal protagonist and really convey the fact that immortality is both a blessing and a curse. It's just a shame the core plot didn't have so much care put into it.…Expand

Technically the game looks very good for the time and doesn't have any bugs which is a achievement for the genre. Artistically speaking I liked the world and enemies design, but the character design is a bit over the top.
Concerning the gameplay it fully fills its objective of reminding the old days of JRPG with a good old turn base fighting system, the management of your party (all with determined roles) and some epic boss fights on the other end the need of grinding can always be annoying (few people have the patience to spend hours only to farm monsters). It also has its own particularities, Sakaguchi re-used his idea of rows for the fights with the first row adding protection for the ones at the back. To make the fights more alive he also add a timing system (similar to South Park : Stick of Truth for those who know it). that will allow bonus effects if timed perfectly. On the other hand we can't qualify Lost Odyssey as a true open world, the dungeons are very straight forward and there's no exploration outside of these dungeon. Beside the game is on a very linear structure for the most part and only at the end you'll be able to access optional dungeons.
The story is somehow original but the game has a bit of an identity problem between cinematics very childish (and frankly annoying) and written dreams very depressing and much more adult. It stills achieve its main goal and players will want to move forward in the game (around 40 hours to finish the main story) and like any good JRPG it also offers some side quest best left for the end with a very high difficulty. that should provide 10 to 15 hours of additional content before you finish it entirely. A good average for the genre.
In conclusion Lost Odyssey is a good game that will please gamers in need of a good JRPG, but it doesn't go beyond the limits of the genre and will not be remembered like others game (Secret of Mana, FF7, Chrono Trigger, Tales of Symphonia etc.), just a good entertainment .

I only recently picked up a 360, but back in the day, I always found this game very interesting looking. It's old-school, turn-based combat polished to near perfection and even adds a few twists to the mix with its timed button presses (ala Shadow Hearts) that can greatly impact the flow of battle in fun ways. The story, especially the text sections, are exquisite and well payed out. This is also a gorgeous game for 2007 and looks better than many games of the era. The opening in particular is stunningly realized and flows so seamlessly between cinematic and gameplay that it actually caught me off guard. This is a must play title.…Expand

Um dos melhores RPGS a moda antiga da geração passada. Infelizmente foi esquecido, pouco lembrado, mas é um dos melhores RPGS do Xbox junto com Fable. É obrigatório para donos de Xbox.

It uses a wonderful turn-based battle system which utilizes strategy and the traditional "Attack, Defend, Skill, Spell, Item, Flee" commands. The system is challenging, it does not respect nor reward mindlessly mashing the "attack" command as many others games in the genre do. It forces the player to think about their decisions and to use all of their character's skills and abilities wisely, even in simple random encounters. The story is wonderful, chock full of emotion and mystery. The main protagonist, Kaim, has "dreams" which greatly expand to the game's story and are very welcome additions to an already very strong game. The characters are all very likeable save for a few such as Tolten or Cooke/Mack (a person's opinion on these two is heavily influenced by their stance on child characters in JRPGs - I had no problem with them and found them to be endearing and nice additions to the story, while also working to expand on Kaim's character and development). The skill and ring systems offer unique twists to the gameplay and are fun to mess around with. The OST in the game is astounding, especially the main battle theme - you almost want to keep on encountering random enemies just to hear it. The game's ending is also very satisfying. If the main game is not enough, there is lots of side content and bosses that can offer even more fun than the main storyline. I left the game wanting to play it again (and I soon will), and I would recommend this terrific game to any fan of the genre.…Expand

I went back to this game after dropping it a long time ago and I'm glad I did. The game can be frustrating at times but the story and gameplay were great.

It's better than FF12, FF13. The story of this game is very good. If you have xbox one or xbox series, you could play much more comfortably and rapidly than xbox 360.

If you are a fan of JRPG's in general like I am then you will love this game to. Good story, great mechanics, exploration is good also. Very under the radar. Since Microsoft owns the rights they need to at least bring it to GamePass but having it enhanced would be even better.

This felt like a whole new final fantasy RPG. What a treat to get on the xbox 360. If you like the linear JRPG genre and final fantasy series, then this will be right for you.

One of the best RPGs of its generation, buried beneath misunderstandings and lack of market penetration. I'm so glad through the Xbox Series X, I can play this in 2022!
